How to Get Windows 8.1 on Your PC Now

If you've already got Windows 8 installed, it can be well worth your while to download the free preview version of Windows 8.1. New personalization and services improvements are among the many enhancements included in this widely anticipated update, which is expected to remedy many of the problems in its predecessor. Step 1? You guessed it: Make sure you have a recovery image.

It's no secret that Windows 8 has met with only a lukewarm reception, but life in the tech world moves quickly, and now Windows 8.1 is on the way.

If you've installed Windows 8, it's worth downloading the recently released free preview version of Windows 8.1. By doing so, you will be able to take advantage of the updated OS's personalization and services improvements. The final build will be out later this year.

Curious Windows 7 users can also check out 8.1 by creating and installing an ISO file from the Microsoft website. I've written about ISO-creating concepts before.

Windows 8 users update to Windows 8.1 through the Windows Store. Here's how to go about it if you've already got Windows 8 installed.

Step 1:
Verify that you have a recovery partition on your hard drive. Access the Command Prompt from the Windows 8 Search charm by entering the term Command. Right click on the result and choose Run as Administrator from the options.

Confirm at the prompts, and then enter the term "recimg /showcurrent" at the Command Prompt to identify if there is a recovery image present.
Step 2:
Create a recovery image if, in the previous step, a "no active recovery image" error appears.

Create the image by creating a folder called Refreshimage at the Command Prompt and then entering "recimg -createimage c:\refreshimage" and Enter.

Tip: The create folder command is "mkdir c:\refresiimage" and then Enter.
Step 3:
Create a USB recovery drive. This will allow you to revert back to your previous install from external media if you need to.

Enter the term Recovery in the Search charm and touch or click Settings. Then choose Create a Recovery Drive and the tool will open.

Choose Copy the Recovery Partition from the PC to the Recovery Drive checkbox and choose Next. Then insert a USB drive, choose it from the options presented and touch or click Next followed by Create. Allow the file transfer to take place and then choose Finish. Then remove and store the flash drive.

Step 4:
Browse to the Windows 8.1 Preview Web page and choose the Get It Now button. Then follow the prompts to open the file and allow the install to take place.

Tip: Back up your personal data before updating any operating system. An update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 should retain Windows settings, personal files and most apps.
Step 5:

Restart the PC when prompted, and then open the Store by touching or clicking on the Store tile. Then choose the Update Windows tile or any Update Windows prompt.
Step 6:
Select Download and allow the download to proceed. Follow the prompts to restart and allow the setup to proceed. Follow the prompts to set up the account, including entering a security code that can be sent by email when prompted.
Step 7:
Explore the new features, which include navigation arrows where there was previously white space, and other navigation tools, like a Windows icon for flipping between classic desktop and Windows 8 Start page.

Tip: You'll need your Windows 8 product key when you update to the final edition of Windows 8.1 later this year.

Sony and Panasonic collaborate to develop 300GB CD (optical disc)

Japanese giants look to create next generation optical discs to help businesses archive data

Sony and Panasonic are teaming up to develop a recordable disc that can store up to 300GB of data.

The companies break this news on 30-July-2013 that they will work together to create a new standard for an optical disc and are aiming to have a product ready by the end of 2015.

In comparison, today's Blu-ray discs can store 25GB on a single layer and 50GB on a dual layer.

Despite fewer computers packing an optical drive and USB sticks becoming increasingly popular, the announcement indicates that the Japanese technology giants believe that there is still a place in the market for discs.

The discs will be targeted at professional users that need to archive huge amounts of data for long-term storage. However, they will also appeal to consumers that are looking to store HD video and other forms of content-heavy media.

Pointing to an example of businesses making use of the technology, Sony said that 300GB discs could be used by the video production industry, including motion picture houses and broadcasters. It also said that cloud-based data centres could also tap into the high-capacity discs to retain large quantities of data.

"Optical discs have excellent properties to protect them against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored," said Sony.

"They also allow inter-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can continue to be read even as formats evolve. This makes them a robust medium for long-term storage of content."

Sony Android Water resistant Smart Watch

Following Casio’s line of “computer watches” several decades ago, Sony has brought about a new craze: the Sony SmartWatch 2. Enabled with NFC connectivity, the watch is filled with a variety of features and easily serves as a partner to the Android smartphone.

Good news for the clumsy who regularly drop objects into water, the innovative watch is also waterproof and water resistant. That means you can go swimming or shower without worrying about having to get a new watch. This is guaranteed by the IP57 rating the SmartWatch 2 has received, which allows for an immersion of liquid ranging between a depth of 15cm to 1m.

Among the different features the watch offers is the ability to take calls or use it to remotely trigger your camera shutter. If you decide to take a jog, you can turn to the watch to quickly glance at its mapping facet.

Moreover, NFC eases the process of pairing and even contains Facebook login. Android leaves its mark on the user interface, which gives a similar feel.

In contrast with the previous generation of this model, the SmartWatch 2 has a larger 1.6-inch display that offers a better view of daylight with its 220 x 176 pixel resolution.

It is designed with an aluminum feature that holds a button reminiscent to that of Sony’s Xperia Z kin of phones and tablets. The new watch will be available in an array of colors and strap styles to choose from.

iPotty for Kids Digital Entertainment

Does it need any explaining? Yes, the iPotty is real and is on display here at CES 2013. CTA Digital, maker of iPad and Kindle accessories — or appcessories — is showing off a number of new iPad toys at the show, but the high-tech solution to potty training is surely turning heads.

The iPotty training system has a built-in case for an iPad and the company says it is the perfect way to keep your toddler on the bowl.

More CES Crazy: Move cat ears with your mind

“When you are potty training you have to keep them busy. This keeps them engaged and gives them rewards for the right kind of behavior,” said Lois Eiler of CTA Digital. In fact, there are a number of potty training apps already in the app store, including “It’s Potty Time.” The idea is that you fire up the apps, put your child on the potty and…wait.

The iPotty costs $39.99 (iPad not included, obviously) and is compatible with the iPad 2 and the current model.

Oh, and don’t worry, it does come with iPad protection. It has a touch-screen protector to, yes, guard against messy hands and pee. Perhaps that’s the real innovation here and CTA should think about making one for adults.

Makers of the iPotty told the BBC that kids can use the toilet “for entertainment,” or load up an app to help potty train them.

God help us all if they build a dude-sized one of these things.
