Apple iTV Launch Date Set For 2013

Looking like Focxonn methodically buying shares of Japanese Sony, producing LCD monitors and TVs, it is difficult to avoid the thought that Apple corporation is not involved in this. We have already wrote you that Focxonn produces Apple TV. Rumors that the iPhone and iPad maker is preparing to release iTV on the market have been existed for a long time.

Apple’s vice president of Internet software and services, Eddy Cue, explained why the company does not make sense to rush with the entry of television services. The main principle of Apple, as was explained by a top manager, was the desire to offer customers the best experience and solve key problems. If Apple is not ready to follow this principle, it does not go to the market.

Poor user interface and the need to pay for proposals package of Apple cable channels are the main problems in today’s television. Company could provide consumers with a more convenient interface, but to broadcast the content for the viewers via cable is impossible for Apple, because they are concentrated in the hands of a few media corporations that are interested in the current situation. In addition, Apple would be difficult to enter the international market with specific programs that are of interest mainly residents of one country or region.

Rumors that Apple is preparing to launch its own iTV, have been going for years. Also Apple had Macintosh TV! In mid-August, as we reported that the company is in talks with major cable operators about the possibility of transmission of content via new television set.

Apple Is The Most Valuable Company At $622 Billion

It would take a brave man to try and attempt to predict when Apple’s stock will stop rising and eventually find its limit. The share price has continued to rise and rise over recent months and the intense speculation surrounding the new iPhone and any other possible hardware releases next month obviously have played their part with the share price rising by a total of 8 percent so far this month, with 2.3 percent rise today alone in afternoon trading.

Today’s 2.3 percent increase saw the price rise to $662.73 per share, which in itself doesn’t really seem that out of the ordinary but the story is really in the milestone that the rise took the company past rather than the minimal increase itself. The rise saw Apple’s market value rise to $620 billion to become the most valuable company of all time, a record that we would imagine will not sit well with Microsoft considering it is their milestone they have surpassed.

Back in 1999, at the height of their success, Redmond based Microsoft had a market cap of $619.00 billion, but as it has been pointed out that when inflation is taken into account that would roughly sit at about $840 billion. It isn’t really any great surprise that Apple’s stock is rising at the minute as the company is surrounded by unprecedented levels of interest in their next-generation iPhone that is due to be announced in less than four weeks. History has shown us that the company’s stock always excels when surrounded by this type of speculation.

When the eventual rollout of the new iPhone occurs toward the end of September, analysts are suggesting that there are a number of things that could negatively affect the stock price of the company, including supply issues and suppliers inability to produce components to match demand for any new devices that Apple introduce us to next month. Unfortunately for Apple they have been blighted by supply chain problems in the past and will be hoping that this doesn’t occur again this time around. It may be good news for Apple that they have become the most valuable company ever, but let’s hope the press announcement next month is good news for consumers with the introduction of some out of the world hardware.

Bye Bye Adobe Flash Player for Android

Since September 2011 Adobe had planned the end on June 28 the company announced the final date and this date is August 15. However, this does not mean that Flash player which is already installed will be abandoned. Also it means that those who installed Flash on iPhone will lose it. The company promises to release a security update, but the development of the plug will not be made longer.

Microsoft, in turn, announced that their new operating system Windows 8 well will have a limited support for Flash player within Internet Explorer application 10. How it will look like in practice we only have to learn.

Thus the war which at one time Steve Jobs unleashed, seems has come to its logical conclusion. It is not so audible cries of Adobe flash player supporters, who predicted the end of iOS due to lack of support for this advanced multimedia plug-in. Also you can download flash player for Mac. And it seems that Adobe just threw in the towel and finally admitted defeat not so much on HTML5 (this is still far away), but agreed that the mobile Flash player is not needed on the consumer market. How else to explain that the company’s own hands strangled his child on one of the freest and most popular Android mobile system?

iOS users from the very beginning did without Flash, but it was often difficult to explain their green friends that without it there is life, it is not the end. And now the most resentful of us can look askance with a sly look in his eyes and say, “Well, I told you about Adobe Flash player end.”

Mozilla Announced OS for Smartphones

We had reported earlier about Mozilla announcing its own operating system for smartphones, dubbed Firefox OS. You can now download the nightly builds from Mozilla’s website. While the build can't be downloaded on your phone, you can take the upcoming OS for a spin on a computer. Though, not as easy as installing an app, it’s still relatively doable.

The operating system was announced quite some time ago, with the codename Boot2Gecko. The project has since developed a lot, and the new smartphone with the Firefox OS is expected to be seen in 2013.

The builds on Mozilla’s website provide an x86 compatible Boot2Gecko runtime for testing the Gaia shell and applications that are built for the platform. It’s a very useful tool for Gaia contributors and developers who want to start building apps for the devices coming next year.

The Boot2Gecko project unlocks many of the current limitations of web development on mobile, allowing HTML5 apps to access the underlying capabilities of the phone, which were previously available only to native apps. Telefónica’s Digital unit had partnered with Mozilla to showcase a new phone architecture where every phone feature such as calling, messaging, and games is an HTML5 application.

During the unveiling of the OS, Mozilla stated, “Mapping to key Firefox footprints around the globe,leading operators such as Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica and Telenor are backing the open Firefox OS as an exciting new entrant to the smartphone marketplace. They have also identified the potential of the technology to deliver compelling smartphone experiences at attainable prices." 

Mozilla claims that the optimization of the platform for entry-level smartphones, and the removal of unnecessary middleware layers will enable mobile operators to offer richer experiences at a range of price points. These price pints would cover the lower end of the smartphone price range, which will help drive adoption across developing markets. Mozilla and all participants are committed to ensuring that the project is fully open, and the reference implementation of the required Web APIs is being submitted to W3C for standardization.

While this sounds very good, the main threat the company faces is that from big competitors. New platforms have been launched every now and then, but most haven’t seen much success, and a lot have just been shelved mid-way. CEO Matthew Key of Telefónica Digital in Europe has acknowledged, “We don’t underestimate the size of the task. There have been many new OSes launched and most of them have failed.”

Fingers are crossed till 2013 to see what Mozilla does with the Firefox OS.

Firefox 14 Released For Windows, Mac, Linux – Download Now!

Mozilla’s Firefox has been around for quite a while now, and despite Google continually pushing updates of its fast-growing Chrome browser, Firefox has continued to remain resilient, altering its own release schedule in a bid to stay relevant. Hence, here we are at Firefox 14, and just six weeks after Firefox 13 was seeded on Mozilla’s servers, and the fourteenth iteration still manages to offer a bunch of useful changes.

The main focus of Firefox 14, it would seem, is improving security, and although Mozilla’s number one browser hasn’t exactly gained notoriety for security lapses, the changes are most certainly welcome. For starters, Google searches are now automatically encrypted, and there’s added support for the Pointer Lock API. In addition, those running on OS X 10.7 can now enjoy full-screen browsing.

The clincher has to be the Google search encryption though, and according to Mozilla, Google search data is encrypted by default, while users can also verify a website’s identity readily by clicking the icon situated to the left hand side of the URL bar. The heightened security will benefit all users of Firefox, and in particular, those on wireless connections who’re naturally more susceptible to intrusion.

Pointer Lock will offer improved mouse control, which is particularly handy for those frequently using web-based apps or games. Seems as though Firefox is preparing its browser for the point when HTML5 becomes the coding language of choice, and Pointer Lock is a prime example.

The six week release schedule has been a hot topic of debate around Mozilla from the get-go, with some developers questioning whether the move prompted users to migrate over to Chrome. While I would say releasing a point update so frequently might have bamboozled a few users at first, I do believe the frequent releases are beneficial on the whole, keeping Firefox in the news while also allowing Mozilla to deliver decent features month in, month out.

Google Chrome v21 Beta supports webcam

Google’s Chrome browser is quite popular. Now, Chrome has reached its 21st version with packs new features. Chrome 21 is currently in the beta version. Usually, the Chrome updates are common and they don’t receive much fanfare. But, the recent update has a couple of treats that are worth mentioning.

One of its major features is the support to webcam and microphone without the necessity of a third party software or plugin. The browser supports web camera and mic using the getUserMedia API which was introduced.  

The native video chatting support lets the web applications use the camera and microphone without any plugins. This is surely going to be handy while setting up video chats. 

The official blog of Chrome offers more details about these new additions that are made to the browser. There are many other features that are implemented in the new build. It has improved Google Cloud Print service which lets the users to directly print to Google Drive or any other cloud ready printer. Download the Beta version of Google Chrome.

Google has axes the Chrome support for the Mac OS 10.5 in the Chrome 22. This version of the browser is available for the developers through the Dev channel. This is not a bad news as the Mac OS 10.5 is outdated.

Apple's back with new more powerful MacBooks

Apple on Monday, 11-Jun-2012 unveiled a new lineup of Macintosh laptops, including a revamped MacBook Air, the lightest of the computers, and a thinner, more powerful MacBook Pro.

The move keeps Apple, which has been dominating the market for tablet computers like the iPad, in the game against a new line of slimmer laptops using Microsoft Windows or the Google Chrome operating system.

"Today we've updated the entire MacBook line with faster processors, graphics, memory, flash storage and USB 3 connectivity," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing.

"We've made the world's best portable family even better and we think users are going to love the performance advances in both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro."

The MacBook Air is facing new competition from PCs which have slimmed down for extra portability but Apple boasted about the superiority of the MacBook.

"Everyone is trying to copy it, they find it's not so easy," Schiller said, adding that the new models will see a boost in speed and memory and cost $100 less than previous versions.

The high-performance MacBook Pro will include the so-called retina display used on the new iPads, giving an extra high resolution screen.

"It is simply the best computer Apple has ever made," Schiller said.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro will be 0.71 inches (1.8 centimeters) thick and weigh 4.46 pounds (2.02 kilos) and include the retina display, described as "the world's highest resolution notebook display with over five million pixels, three million more than an HD television.

"The MacBook Pro with Retina display pushes the limits of performance and portability like no other notebook," said Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive.

"With a gorgeous Retina display, all flash architecture and a radically thin and light design, the new MacBook Pro is the most advanced Mac we have ever built." Prices start at $1,399.

The MacBook Air is as thin as 0.68 inches (1.7 centimeters) and weighs as little as 2.38 pounds (1.08 kilos). Its price starts at $999.

Cisco Kills Android-Powered Cius Tablet

Cisco has decided to discontinue its Android-based Cius tablet. OJ Winge, senior vice president for the telepresence technology group, Cisco says that the company "will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what's available today."

First announced in June 2010, the 17.8-cm (7-inch) tablet runs Android 2.2.2 on an Intel Atom processor. It was billed as a "Mobile Collaboration Endpoint". Earlier in 2012, Cisco said it was working on larger and smaller versions of the $750 tablet. However, the company didn't come out with any modified devices. 

"It's not hard to see what hastened the Cius to its early demise, as Winge pins it on companies and customers encouraging a BYOD (bring your own device) strategy that likely brought more than a few iPads and beefier Android tablets into the space Cisco wanted to occupy," said an Engadget report.

However, the company plans to offer the Cius tablet to customers with "specific needs". Cisco will now be focussing on software such as Jabber and WebEx. "Moving forward, we intend to double down on software offerings, like Jabber and WebEx, that provide the anytime, anywhere, and any device experiences. We will leverage key learnings and key collaboration experiences native to Cius in our other collaboration products," Winge added.

Facebook To Buy Out Opera And Create Its Own Browser

Facebook’s IPO just a week ago has been surrounded by controversy ever since, with the consensus being that the social network was grossly over-valued, while CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also been accused of not being wholly transparent with the numbers.

Despite the mini-saga post IPO, reports suggest Facebook is already gearing up for its next major acquisition. Having only last month purchased Instagram for a billion dollars, trusted sources of Pocket-lint suggest the company is poised to buy out the Opera browser for its own.

Given Facebook’s  prowess on the web – second only to Google as the most visited domain – the move makes a great deal of sense, and the browser would certainly provide the optimal experience for the 900 million (and counting) strong army of Facebook users. Moreover, it would allow Facebook to compete with some of the other prominent tech companies – joining the ranks of Apple and Google – both of whom have their own, very popular browsers.

Having used Opera Mini on both Android and iOS, the mobile app is fairly well suited to Zuck’s social company. Why? Well, for lack of a more eloquent phrase, it sucks – just like most of Facebook’s mobile apps continue to do. Still, with 168 million consumers using the Mini version – as well as 270 million using the desktop iteration, it provides a decent springboard for Facebook to get its foot in the door in the browser wars.

Opera – while not as prominent as the likes of Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer, has a decent enough following to cause a stir – especially with the Facebook gravy train behind it. Building a new browser from scratch would make little sense from Facebook’s point of view, since the first year on the stock market will be a crucial one, and the quicker the company can be monetized from all angles, the better.

With Yahoo! having also launched its own effort recently, this isn’t just an acquisition Facebook will be making because it wants to. Such a buy is needed, and it will be intriguing to see how this one pans out.

Neither Facebook nor Opera were in the mood to pass comment on the matter, and it’s likely we’ll only learn of a deal once it has been done.
